About Varicella
Varicella (Chickenpox) Overview
Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. In Ireland, there are approximately 58,000 cases annually, primarily affecting children under 10 years old, though people of any age can be infected.1,2

Clinical Impact
- Around 1 in 250 cases require hospitalisation (2) due to complications such as bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, or neurological issues. (3)
- Symptoms typically appear 10 to 21 days after exposure (3) and include:
- A characteristic itchy rash with fluid-filled blisters that crust over in 1-2 weeks (3)
- Fever, fatigue, headache, and loss of appetite (1,3)
Contagious Period
Patients are contagious 1-2 days before the rash appears until all blisters have scabbed over. (3) Scabs naturally fall off after 1-2 weeks. (1)
Long-term Considerations
After recovery, the virus remains dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate later in life as shingles. (1)
