About Varicella
Varicella (Chickenpox) Overview
Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. In Ireland, there are approximately 58,000 cases annually, primarily affecting children under 10 years old, though people of any age can be infected.1,2
Clinical Impact
- Around 1 in 250 cases require hospitalisation due to complications such as bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, or neurological issues.2,3
-
Symptoms typically appear 10 to 21 days after exposure and include: 3
- A characteristic itchy rash with fluid-filled blisters that crust over in 1-2 weeks 1,3
- Fever, fatigue, headache, and loss of appetite 1,3
Contagious Period
Patients are contagious 1-2 days before the rash appears until all blisters have scabbed over. Scabs naturally fall off after 1-2 weeks.1,3
Long-term Considerations
After recovery, the virus remains dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate later in life as shingles.1
Chickenpox Prevention: What You Need to Know
Varicella Vaccination with VARIVAX
- VARIVAX is indicated for individuals aged 12 months and older.4
- The varicella vaccine is now part of Ireland’s routine childhood immunisation schedule. From 1 October 2025, all babies born on or after 1 October 2024 are eligible to receive the vaccine free of charge at 12 months of age, administered through GPs.5
- Children born before this date, or non-immune individuals aged ≥12 months, should consult their GP or pharmacist about vaccination.
- Individuals should receive two doses of the vaccine to ensure optimal protection against Varicella.4
Key Takeaways
- Be aware of the recent changes to the primary childhood immunisation schedule and advise parents accordingly.
- Recognise chickenpox symptoms early and educate patients on contagiousness and complications.
- Consider vaccination for susceptible individuals, especially those at higher risk of severe disease.
